Is Something Bugging You???
Getting to watch the 1st year/inters, HND and Dance company put on their own interpretation of a certain image through imagery, physical theatre, body percussion and story telling was interesting to watch. Seeing as I knew the image was of a dragonfly in the rain resting on a leaf it was interesting to watch how all 5 groups had a different way of portraying that picture. As a collective the talent and ability as actors/dancers this year is high and after watching these It has made me excited to see what other work they can all produce over the next year.
The Dancers were the first to perform and like all the other dance work i’ve seen they were in sync and precise with there movements. It was interesting to watch what they produced through motif’s of dance moves yet at the same time I didn’t get a clear understanding of what they were trying to tell us. Its not a bad thing but it was harder for me to see a clear picture. It was distracting when some of the dancers lost focus by moving there eye line or was out of sync with the others, because it drew me to them rather than watching as a collective. I know how hard it is the work that precisely so I take me hats off to them because you can tell they have been working hard.
The HND group was the group I came out from and thought WOW. The performance was amazing from each actor on that stage. They had a strong storyline with the actors using lifts, dance and physical theatre to portray different types of bugs with one actor playing the bug catcher. The storyline concluded with a scorpion killing the bug catcher. I thought Phil Edmonds who played the Bug Catcher was brilliant especially in the section where he is on his own on stage and being attacked and at war with a fly. It was amazing to watch because it did actually look like he was fighting this imaginary fly. The focus and determination on each actor added to the piece, plus the use of comedy from the bugs and the catcher captured me as an audience member from start to finish.
The final three groups where the 1st year actors and the intermediate actors split into 3 groups. I was really interested to see what they could create as a company and the ability they all have because we will be working with the inter’s on the christmas show and hopefully both in the end of year show. The group that stood out most to me was the 1st group who went from being bugs then to humans swatting the bugs. I really liked the use of newspapers used to create the word ‘without words’ The focus and commitment from the actors surprised me and kept me intrigued the whole way through. I especially liked the physical theatre the company used lifts they done on one company member in particular. Where he ran up there backs and then had his fellow company member help him move in the air. Visually it looked outstanding and wouldn’t mind trying that out myself. Overall I think all three performance were strong in there own way and already many of the actors are showing great potential. I was very impressed with the work they created and it’s made me excited to work along side them in the future.
